Blue Jay is a medium-sized songbird known to have a brilliant blue body covering, white underparts, black neck feathers, and crests. The solid black bill of the bird makes it suitable for cracking seeds and other foods. Blue wings covered with black and white markings are easily seen when the birds are flying.
The dark-colored eyes of Blue Jay give them good vision while flying over woodland canopies and suburban areas. Both sexes look alike, and it is hard to differentiate between the males and females.
The diet of a Blue Jay consists of acorns, beechnuts, seeds, insects, fruit, and even small vertebrates sometimes. Acorns are vital as, due to storing of the nuts, they sometimes help in reforestation by forgetting the location. Feeding can be done either on the ground level or in the treetops. They can also easily visit backyard feeders.
Intelligence to outsmart and survive
The Blue Jays have great intelligence and are part of the adaptable crow family. They are able to memorize the location where food is stored and help them survive during seasons when food sources are scarce. The birds are capable of creating many types of sounds and even imitating the call of hawks to deter other competing birds.
Natural enemies consist of hawks, owls, snakes, raccoons, and domestic cats. The alarm calls notify other birds when danger lurks. Because of their boldness, they can even mob the predator. There is evidence to prove that their behavior involves sophisticated skills of solving problems.
Migration and family
Blue jays are migratory birds whereby some live all year around, while others migrate towards the south during cold months. These birds can be found in deciduous forest areas, mixed forest areas, parks, and suburbs. Construction of nests is done on tree branches utilizing materials such as twigs, roots, bark fragments, and grasses. The nest-building activity is done by both male and female jays, and the young ones are taken care of by both parents.
A Blue Jay is known to have the ability to recognize individual people under particular circumstances, which shows the adaptability of its mind. As a result of their distinct looks, intelligence, and importance to the environment, they are regarded as one of most popular and extensively studied birds in North America. The migratory pattern of Blue Jays is quite unique due to great annual variability.
