Colorful Birds of the Tropics
One can hear their calls before seeing them; the barbets are some of the most attractive birds seen in the tropical and subtropical areas worldwide. The medium-sized birds are known for having brightly colored feathers, strong bodies, and heavy bills that are fringed by feathers. Barbets differ in appearance since each species comes in various colors, such as green, red, yellow, blue, and black, which allow them to hide and yet still attract attention from the environment.
Distribution and Common Species
The Barbets live in Asia, Africa, and certain parts of America. In India, the Coppersmith Barbet and Brown-headed Barbet commonly inhabit gardens, parks, orchards, and forests. The repetitive calls of the Coppersmith Barbet, which sound like “tuk-tuk-tuk,” have a regularity like that of a person hitting copper with a hammer.
Diet and Ecological Importance
Fruit is the main part of the diet of barbets, which helps in the dispersal of seeds. In addition, insect consumption is common at times, especially during the mating season, due to higher requirements.
Home and Mates
Another interesting characteristic about barbets is their nesting habits. By using their sharp bills, they dig holes in the trunks of trees and their branches, which serve as nest cavities. In addition, they reuse some of these nests during their next mating season or make them available to other organisms.
Powerful Calls and Masters of Camouflage
Their vocalizations are remarkably loud despite their size. In this way, the sounds travel for great distances even within the thickest of forests, enabling identification by potential mates and rivals. During their mating period, they usually employ their calls to defend their nests as well as to woo potential partners.
The colorful plumage of barbets does not necessarily make them easily visible, as they hide in foliage without moving much. Yet another remarkable characteristic about barbets is their strong territorial nature. The unique appearance, specific sounds, and important roles of the barbets have made them a highly interesting subject among ornithologists around the world.
